Following on from the success of the 2021 BASCD Masterclass series, we are excited to offer a new suite of masterclass sessions commencing in summer 2023 for BASCD members.
This BASCD Masterclass series will aim to disseminate DBOH content, distilling some of the key messages with the opportunity for colleagues to discuss with the experts.
Session 2: Dental Diseases in particular caries, periodontal disease and tooth wear.

The second Masterclass in the series which will focus on Dental Diseases, in particular caries, periodontal disease and tooth wear.

Avijit Banerjee Hon. Consultant / Clinical Lead, Restorative Dentistry
Avijit Banerjee is Professor of Cariology & Operative Dentistry / Hon. Consultant and Clinical Lead, Restorative Dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences, King’s College London / Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospitals Foundation Trust, London, UK.
He holds the positions of Head of Conservative & MI Dentistry, Director of Education (UG) and Programme Director of the innovative KCL distance-learning Masters in Advanced Minimum Intervention Dentistry.
He also leads the Cariology & Operative Dentistry research programme, researching, publishing and lecturing internationally about MI operative caries management and adhesive dental biomaterials
He is editor-in-chief of Oral Health & Preventive Dentistry and an editorial board member of the Journal of Dental Research, Dental Update, British Dental Journal, International Journal of Adhesion & Adhesives, and the Primary Dental Journal. He is also a member of the British Dental Association Health & Science Committee, all whilst maintaining wet-fingered specialist clinical practice in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics & Periodontics.
Ian Needleman Professor of Periodontology and Evidence-Informed Healthcare
Ian is Professor of Periodontology and Evidence-InformedHealthcare at University College London, Eastman Dental Institute, London UK. He leads the Centre for Oral Health and Performance (www.ucl.ac.uk/cohp) which was awarded recognition by the International Olympic Committee as part of the UK Research Centre for prevention of injury and protection of athlete health. He is also in specialist practice at PerioLondon. Ian is a Cochrane Editor for Periodontal Health.
His research has been awarded prizes by the European Federation of Periodontology, Royal Society of Medicine, German Periodontal Society, German Cochrane Centre and International Association for Dental Research. He was awarded the UCL Provost’s Prize for Institutional Leadership in Public Engagement in 2017 and nominated as an inspiring teacher by UCL in 2007. During the pandemic, Ian worked with ICU to develop a Family Liaison Team which received both the 2021 Intensive Care Society Improvement Project and the UCLH Top Quality Patient care awards.
Ian is a past president of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and was a member of the International Olympic Committee, Scientific Committee for the 2014 Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Monaco and a Faculty member for 2017. He has been a member of many international consensus Workshops in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.
Saoirse O'Toole Clinical Lecturer in Prosthodontics
Dr. Saoirse O’Toole is a Clinical Lecturer in Prosthodontics at King’s College London's Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Clinical Sciences.
Her research interests include identifying groups at high risk of tooth wear progression and developing practice-based methods to prevent and monitor tooth wear. This includes translational, clinical and laboratory methodologies in addition to behavioural research.
Dr O'Toole is currently focusing on the development of software to accurately quantify intraoral changes at a micron level. She is active in public and patient engagement and in increasing awareness about the condition.
Aims: To disseminate DBOH content, distilling some of the key messages with the opportunity for colleagues to discuss with the experts.
CPD hours: One hour & 30 minutes CPD
Learning outcomes:
- Evidence-based insights into the updates within the DBOH (v4) on dental diseases, i.e. dental caries, periodontal diseases and tooth wear.
- An understanding of clinical recommendations for the prevention and management of dental diseases in the context of dental public health.
GDC development outcomes: C, maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice
